Sketches

I showed Dan my collage and for the most part he like it. He gave me some suggestions and showed me some photoshop tricks that will help me with layering the pictures together. Dan has already been working on some sketches for the set. We looked at them and discussed what he really wanted to see in the design. My next step is to do some sketching of my own using my own collage as inspiration.

Visual Inspiration

Today, Dan and I met so that we could exchange our visual research. We talked a little bit about what really stood out to us from the text. I really connect to the idea that Hester is a dog, or bitch, in society. Everyone in her world treats her as if she's a dog, giving her little rewards that hardly help her for performing certain tricks. The doctors sandwich board which says "SPAY" is more exidence for this. Dan has started to look at metal structures for the bridge where Hester lives because he finds them more visually interesting than the freeway underpasses that I have been looking at. Either way, we both had a lot of similar images of homeless people. I decided that I'd like to focus more on the "mothers being held down" motif for my visual research. My next step is to create a photoshop collage 11X17 with the images that I think will work with the script.

How I got HERE

Theatre, having always been a passion of mine, is quite possibly the only place that I actually feel comfortable being myself. However, acting is just not what I'm cut out to do. I took a couple semesters off from Chico State, which was one of the worst decisions that has ever been made, but it did open my eyes to other possibilities. I got involved heavily in the Theatre department at LTCC doing electrics, sound, and various other things, including painting. Simultaneously, I started to take art classes which made me realize that I actually really enjoy designing pieces. And then I realized I could fuse these two things into doing one thing.

Back at Chico State, I decided to declare myself a theatre major and I started to take classes; Stage Design and Foundations of Design. Fall 2008, I did my first designing for a production, working on props for Ubu Roi. This show gave me a new perspective on how to deal with my own ways of working on a production. Thus, bringing me to my reason of writing this blog. I think that it is really important for me to document my process, which will help me in the end with my reflections and my binder.
